GUIDE TO LEAFCLAWS & FERNCLAWS | |
synopsis. fernclaws and leafclaws are, essentially, a similar system to that we saw in the canon warriors series in windclan with moor-runners and tunnelers. they share a basic foundation of skills, such as hunting, fighting, and defending - but have specific subspecialties and toolkits that they learn in their specific leafclaw or fernclaw training regimes. a fernclaw cannot hunt in the trees as swiftly as a leafclaw. a leafclaw cannot hunt in dense undergrowth as silently as a fernclaw. where one lacks a skill the other has mastered it: this is the way the clan has been since arriving here, named for the two legendary sisters fernclaw and leafclaw, the first skyclan kits to be born here on the coast five leaderships ago. this thread is going to help you get a better understanding of both fernclaws, leafclaws, and the two she-cats who started it all - so you can see where your character would fit and how it effects them! |
stigmas & beliefs.
leafclaw & fernclaw couples.
there is a stigma between a leafclaw and fernclaw getting together and having kits together. it's believed that because they're built for such different capabilities, the kits would be misshapen and have trouble performing as one rank or another. they are not illegal, but are heavily frowned upon by many skyclan warriors.
sacred names.
to avoid confusion, it is encouraged among parents of newborn kits to refrain from using the names "leaf" and "fern," as skyclan holds the legend of the two sisters who began this particular system dear to their hearts. it is not forbidden, but is considered a brash move on the parent's part, especially if they name a kit after the division that is not their own. i.e., a leafclaw names her child fernkit.
head warriors.
one thing that is different about skyclan from any other rendition you might find is the fact that, alongside clan deputy, we have head warriors. they're a bit like de facto "deputies", specifically overseeing assignments for their respective division. these cats are usually senior warriors who have been entrusted to take care of business on their division's end. for example, a head fernclaw will assign patrols to check rabbit's glide for foxes while a head leafclaw will send a patrol out to take out a new hawk's nest at thornbush yew.
they work together with the skyclan deputy if they cannot resolve issues occurring themselves. these cats don't ascend to become leader, and can choose to retire their position at any given time. they have the option to elect their successor, or allow skyclan to cast a democratic vote.

the legend of fernclaw and leafclaw.
When SkyClan was purged from the old forest, their culture was decimated and run into the earth by natural oppression and outweighed by the banished Clan's desire to survive through the most necessary of means. However, when SkyClan found the coastal forest and determined it was a suitable place to settle and provide for future generations, they found the time and means to reinvent themselves in StarClan's absence.
From nothing came the siblings Fernkit and Leafkit born in the first generation of kits birthed beneath the canopies of the seaside. As they grew older, Fernpaw shared a penchant for stalking and hunting in the undergrowth, whereas Leafpaw was partisan to keeping herself high in the trees, besting even the most masterful of SkyClan's senior climbers.
The first Leaf-bare endured by SkyClan was a vicious and cruel one, stealing away the lives of numerous of its older and more seasoned warriors, those who were worn after the long journey from the old forest. A fox entered the forest encompassing the alder gorge, and while SkyClan's older cats tried to lure it away, they were unable to.
It was Leafclaw and Fernclaw, named together for their unity and skill, who devised a plan to use their respective affinities -- Fernclaw in the undergrowth and Leafclaw in the trees -- to lead the fox out of the territory. However, when the fox seemed to catch on it was being led, it turned on Fernclaw. It was then that Leafclaw rained down from above, and landed squarely on its back. The young fox was petrified from being attacked from seemingly out of nowhere and fled the forest.
The then-leader at the time, Olivesky, was impressed by their work, and inquired as to how they did so without a scratch on them. Fernclaw admitted that she kept to the ground and was able to lead the fox, and when it turned to attack her, Leafclaw flew down from the trees. above. Because they had chosen to train exclusively on the ground and in the trees, respectively, they had made a more effective pair and chased out the beast with minimal conflict.
Olivesky was the first cat to introduce the ranks of ground-hunters and climbers into SkyClan, deeming that every apprentice from ten forward would be elected into a fernclaw or a leafclaw, named in honor of the two creative and clever littermates.
Enough time has passed that this is now a tale that queens tell to their kits to inspire them towards their apprenticehood, and it's rumored that SkyClan's greatest hunters and climbers are direct descendants of the two sisters.
